Yes, Cosmopolitan is the cocktail for which you may have heard almost a zillion things about its color, its sweetness or sourness and how it was invented. It is not a classic cocktail from the past 19th century. It is no longer the trend cocktail in London or New York City, but it is still one of the most popular drinks worldwide. The amazing thing with the “cosmo effect” is that it COULD BE A GOOD START for the interaction between a bartender and a potential cocktail lover. The first recipe that follows, is one of the most common decent recipes that you may use in order to make the drink right. Remember that Cosmopolitan must never be as dark red as cranberry juice itself, or too sweet. Please, try this one:
- 45 ml Absolut Citron Vodka
- 30 ml Triple Sec
- 30 ml cranberry juice
- 15 ml fresh lime juice
Shake all ingredients with ice and double strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange twist, or a simple orange peel. If you press the orange peel over the glass in order to spray some of its oils, you will give a very interesting and flavorful touch in this simple but famous cocktail.
But if you really wanna know how a proper cosmopolitan should be, then you should try the following recipe, adopted from Toby Cecchini’s book: “Cosmopolitan – A bartender’s Life” . Here is what the inventor writes in his book: “… a proper cosmopolitan should be just that nudge over the balancing line into tart. […] If you want me to ruin a perfectly made drink by dumping another shot of sugar in it, I’ll do it. It’s your money, it’s your drink. The cranberry juice is just a stain, really, a dollop to mak the thing fresh looking and cheeky. Any more than a splash and it throws off the balance….[…] Add a lot of ice into the shaker and shake it hard. Like any shaken drink, the Cosmopolitan wants to be brutalized. There should be aeration, collision and dilution galore going on in that shaker…”
Add the exact quantities of the ingredients described below and discover the freshness of simplicity. Do try this at home!
